Getting Organized

As you begin the credit repair process, you'll quickly realize that it involves some paperwork.   You'll want to keep copies of letters that you've sent, copies of letters that you've received, copies of bills, copies of your credit report, and lots of other things.   Do yourself a BIG favor, and take a few minutes to get organized first.   Here are some great tips on how to get and stay organized:

  1. Buy some file folders and labels, and don't use the popular "T" system of filing things.   Looking for The credit report, The letters or The bills later may be a bit frustrating.   Set up a separate file for each credit bureau and each creditor.

  2. Keep all of the files together in one place.   If you don't have a filing cabinet - use a cardboard file storage box.   You can get these at the office supply store for a few dollars.

  3. Keep a record of all telephone contacts that you make.   You might just keep a simple log in each file that list the time, date, who you talked to, and what was discussed.   It need not be elaborate, but it's often helpful when taking with a creditor to remind them that you talked on the 23rd at 2:30 and what was discussed.   You can (and should) also make notes in the creditor files in the software.

  4. Do not send original documents to anyone - send copies and keep the original in your files.

  5. Don't keep useless paperwork.   Make a practice of getting rid of duplicate invoices and letters.

  6. Keep a copy of all correspondence that you receive, and file it in the appropriate file.

We think you'll find that following these simple suggestions will make the entire process much easier.
